The program that will be discussed today will be the Starcraft 2 Editor for the game Starcraft II. Its purpose is to allow the creation of new maps and modification of the game that can be published either online or in the Starcraft II servers. This essay will explore the result of the System Usability Scale or SUS of the Starcraft II editor from the anonymous participants, which leans towards it being very low on the usability scale at 44.5 on average as well as my own personal experiences regarding this program which should serve as an insight on the program.
The participants are from a discord server that filled out a google form that will not be disclosed but are part of the Starcraft II modding community thus are familiar with the program and system as a whole and have been told as such. Despite this familiarity, it does seem like that the majority of participants seemed to rank this low on the SUS survey and based on my experience it is easy to see why. The first reason is that it is very complex to navigate and parse through if you want to go beyond translating or changing text for various units. An example is creating an entire unit, which involves choosing a model in the editor or importing a custom model, creating actors for the models, the events for the actors, and so much more that I will not be exploring further which also ties to the idea that you needed to learn alot of things before they could get going with the program in question. Hence the responses that it’s generally not easy to use and some people need a technical person to help use the program like I did when I first started using the program. There are some people who were very confident using this system and I imagine that some of them were the people that helped me with some issues that I was having when I first started using this program.
It is very clear that it’s a program that the respondents use the program frequently especially considering the community that I’ve shared the google form with is the active modder community that was mentioned earlier which serve as an explanation. The reason why is that it serves as a powerful tool for modifying Starcraft II which can even turn the Real-Time Strategy game into a first-person shooter game for certain maps and game modes.
To conclude this survey, it seems like the SUS for Starcraft II editor seem to range very low for several key reasons. The primary culprits is that the need to learn a lot of things about Starcraft II editors before they could get going with the system, and the fact that most of the participants don’t imagine most people would learn which was daunting even for me when I first started using the program.
